Used Car Salesmen, Lawyers ... and Resume Writers?

Maybe I'm just more sensitive to the subject recently, but it seems that the professional resume writing profession is taking a beating lately. We're the subject of polls, discussed extensively in podcasts, and debated in Facebook posts.

Louise Fletcher, of Blue Sky Resumes
, caught some of this as well, and wrote an excellent note on her Facebook page. A recruiter, Jill, responded back with a post that included this comment:

"It's true that most in your profession just seem to get paid by the word but that's why it's so important that you (Louise) are out there."

Ugh.

  1. Even though I'm one of the "culprits" who put out a poll on the value of professional resume help, I am a strong believer in the need for Professional Resume Writers. The results of the poll tell me that many still need to be educated on what constitutes a good resume. Most recruiters agree that a majority of the resumes they see are not written very well.

  2. Thanks for the response, Jeff!

I don't consider you a "culprit." Engaging in dialogue about the merits of the industry helps us examine how we can improve. You're absolutely right that professional resume writers need to do a better job of educating prospective clients about the value we offer -- and it's our fault for not doing a better job of that.

    Thanks for your input!
