Six Books for Resume Writers to Enjoy, Learn From and Share

I was inspired by this post from Explore B2B of "20 Books to Enjoy, Learn From, and Share" -- and I definitely recommend several of their books (especially numbers 1, 7, and 20!), but most of these are geared towards entrepreneurs in general, not careers industry professionals.

I want to share with you six books for resume writers to enjoy, learn from, and share.

Resume Magic: Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer (4th edition) – Susan Whitcomb
The "bible" of resume writing -- the fourth edition (updated in 2010), this book provides practical guidance for resume writers as well as dozens of samples that have held up to the test of time.

Start, Operate, Profit: The Ultimate Resource for Building a $100,000 Resume-Writing Business -- Teena Rose
The most up-to-date "getting started" guide for resume writers. It covers both business management and operations issues as well as pricing, client communications, writing resumes, and more.

Books to Help You Attract More Clients
Get Clients Now (3rd edition) – C.J. Hayden
If you're looking for a no-nonsense system for attracting more clients to your resume writing business in the next 28 days, this guide will help. You choose a set number of activities to engage in daily for 28 days.

Career Distinction: Stand Out By Building Your Brand -- William Arruda and Kirsten Dixson
One of the best books on personal and career branding, this book will teach you -- and your clients -- how to become "digitally distinct." Buyers of the book will also be able to access a workbook to help them build their brand and identity.

Books To Help Clients
Get Hired Now! -- C.J. Hayden and Frank Traditi
Taking the 28-day system she developed for Get Clients Now, Hayden partners with Traditi to offer a step-by-step system to help jobseekers develop a system to guide their jobsearch.

Updated annually, the 2015 edition provides lots of tools and resources for jobseekers...making this a resource to share with clients. While I disagree with some of Bolles' assertions ("Google is the new resume,") there is enough good content to outweigh the bad (he also discusses online job search strategies extensively, which isn't a great source of new jobs for jobseekers, generally speaking). Resume writers will find his "Starter Kit" questions to be useful to ask clients.

Why Do Employers Hire?

When writing resumes, it's important to keep in mind why employers hire.

In her book, "Resume Magic" (now in its 4th edition!) Susan Britton Whitcomb outlines the 12 "Employer Buying Motivators" -- really, the reason why employers need employees.

There are 12 specific needs that a company has. These include the company's desire to:

  • -       Make money
  • -       Save money
  • -       Save time
  • -       Make work easier
  • -       Solve a specific problem
  • -       Be more competitive
  • -       Build relationships / an image
  • -       Expand business
  • -       Attract new customers
  • -       Retain existing customers


Keep these 12 motivators in mind when writing the resume and target the client's accomplishments towards how they can help the employer meet these 12 objectives.

So What? Make Me Care! Do It Fast!


I love this phrase: "So what? Make me care? Do it fast!"

Deb Dib uses it as the "mantra" for all the work she does for her career clients. It's a phrase she came up with a few years ago at a Career Thought Leaders conference in Baltimore. 

Earlier this week, I attended The Academies' Certified G3! Coaching preview call, where Deb and Susan Whitcomb shared some of the strategies used in the program (you can read some of my take-aways below).

G3, in case you're not aware of it, is "Get Clear, Get Found, Get Hired" and it's a 10-week program designed to teach resume writers and career coaches how to create branded career communications ("career-comm").

It's definitely worth your time, even if you're not ready to pursue the certification yet.

Here were some of my key take-aways:
  • Social media (especially Twitter) and the increase in mobile devices have inspired a need for shorter, more focused career communication documents. That doesn't mean that there isn't a need for two-page resumes (and addendums), but you should also be creating short-form pieces. Mobile devices outnumber PCs by 3-to-1 worldwide, so we as resume writers need to consider how what we write is being consumed … and a lot of it is being read on smartphones and iPads.
  • Deb pointed out that we are helping people navigate one of the most important transitions in their lives — so we need to be on top of our game in terms of knowing what's needed now and what's coming next. As Deb says, "We have a moral imperative to help our clients navigate change."
  • Deb introduced the concept of "Why-Buy-ROI" as a way to express client's "branded value in the marketplace." The "Why-Buy-ROI" formula takes the idea of expressing accomplishments a step further. It says, very quickly, "I know what you need, I can do it, I can prove I can do it, and I can do it again." The formula is: WHO/HOW/WHAT —> Measurable result. (Deb and Susan provide specific examples of this in the video, including one for a support position — which, as you know, it can be hard for people in support roles to quantify their value.)
  • Think in terms of mini-modules that can build upon each other when developing your client's career communications. Susan and Deb described the process as creating a "Parts Store" where you can "shop" to find pieces to meet the client's needs in the job search.


They also showcased the G3 Smart-Step System, and described the pieces that take you (and your clients) from "4 smart steps" to "4 awesome outcomes."


Finally, Deb and Susan talked about how the G3 system can be incorporated into a resume writing business to add additional revenue. Deb said in her first year, she made $750. Total. But she also pointed out that was 20 years ago. She provided a sample price chart that showcases packages that can be built using the G3 system, and the "Power Pitch Resume with Proof-Points™" is twice that alone. Twitter Job Search Guide

I was lucky enough to be selected as a contributor to a new book that just came out last week, "The Twitter Job Search Guide," written by my esteemed colleagues, Susan Britton Whitcomb, Chandlee Bryan, and Deb Dib.

A few weeks ago, contributors were invited to be on a conference call with the authors, and although I haven't seen the book itself yet, I can't wait to read it! These women are amazing, and if you don't follow them yet on Twitter, you should!! You should also check out the website for the book.
